2099 Revisited Podcast | Doom 2099 #1

Doom has arrived! This episode features a recap and discussion of the first issue of Doom 2099. In this opening issue, Doctor Doom mysteriously arrives in the year 2099 to find Latveria under the control of Tiger Wylde. His initial attempt to reclaim power does not go well.

Note: I mention in the episode there is a derogatory term used several times in this comic when referring to Romani people. The Romani have been discriminated against based on stereotypes about their culture for hundreds of years, and that particular term is part of that. Next episode will feature Doom 2099 #2.

Preparations Have Begun

In preparation for the first several episodes of the show, I pulled the first batch of 2099 comics out of the longboxes in the basement.

As mentioned in my last blog post, I will likely being doing 1-2 issues per episode. As I am initially planning things out, I'm only going to focus on one title per episode, but that could potentially change in the future. So for right now, here's how I see the first handful of episodes breaking down in terms of issues covered:

Episode 1: Spider-Man 2099 #1

Episode 2: Spider-Man 2099 #2-3

Episode 3: Doom 2099 #1

Episode 4: Doom 2099 #2

Episode 5: Ravage 2099 #1

Episode 6: Rave 2099 #2-3

Episode 7: Punisher 2099 #1

So, the first seven episodes of the podcast will get us to the original four titles that kicked off the 2099 universe. We will be following the reading order for the 2099 universe, so as you can see, we'll be jumping back and forth between titles, as opposed to just reading each series in its entirely right away.

A little further down the road, we'll be getting into other titles, starting with 2099 Unlimited, and then X-Men 2099.

I hope at least a few others out there are as excited as I am to get started!

We Have Cover Art!

Look at this gorgeous cover art that the amazing Don Cardenas created for this podcast. I am in awe, and in love. I cannot wait to dive back into this universe.

I came to Don with a basic idea for the design for this cover art, as you can see from the pic below:

My initial design pitch: "In the corner, my dumb face (like how Marvel used to use characters' faces). Logo next to that, and either a 2099 landscape, or some characters on the main album art. For individual episode art, it would be a template where I could just add the episode number in the corner, and past a pic of the cover of the issue that would be covered, probably with an episode title next to that. "

I didn't even specify which characters should be included--Don is a 2099 fan, so I knew he'd pic some good ones. He totally ran with it from there, sending me a few updates of the art in progress, including this sketch version I adore:

For those that haven't followed my other podcast stuff, Don previously created the cover at for one of the music podcasts I do, Power Chords:

Amazing, right? Don is such a great artist to collaborate with, because not only does he "get" me, but also because I trust his creative vision completely.

Anyway, all of you should go follow Don on Twitter @doncardenasart, and you can see more of his work at I'll be talking to Don on the podcast about the cover art design, as well as his love of the 2099 universe. Stay tuned!
